We know the current SNAP benefits disruption and ongoing uncertainty around federal funding have created stress for many families. If you’re having trouble affording food or other essentials, please know that help is available—and you are not alone. 
 
Quick Connection to Local and Statewide Help 
Call 2-1-1 or visit 211texas.org for immediate access to food, housing, and financial assistance. This free, confidential resource is available 24/7 in multiple languages. 
 
Local Support in Galveston County 
  • Galveston County Food Bank – Offers food programs for individuals and families, including mobile pantries, senior boxes, and kid-friendly options. November Mobile Food Distribution Calendar is posted on their website. Any Galveston County resident who meets federal income guidelines or has an emergency need can visit ANY mobile site — no matter what city you live in. - Drive-thru style - Registration done onsite
  • St. Vincent’s House – Supports the Galveston community with essential services including food and hygiene pantries, healthcare, counseling, and social support for individuals and families facing hardship.
  • M.I. Lewis Social Service Center (off-island) – Supports low-income families and individuals in Galveston County through services like food assistance, emergency financial aid, senior deliveries, school supply programs, and mobile food fairs.
  • Galveston Community Fridge – Located at 4628 Avenue Q, Galveston, TX 77551, at God’s Kingdom and Restoration Ministries. The fridge and pantry are open to anyone in need. 
  • [catholiccharities.org]Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston – Offers food distributions, rental and utility assistance, bilingual counseling, legal aid for immigrants, senior and veteran services, and emergency support across Galveston County.
National and App-Based Food Resources 
  • Olio – A community-sharing app where individuals give away or share extra food. 
  • Too Good To Go – Connects users with local restaurants offering discounted surplus meals. 
  • FlashFood App – Find discounted groceries from local retailers before they expire. 
  • Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) – Provides emergency food support through local agencies.
  • Project Food Box – Delivers fresh produce boxes to families and communities in need.  
  • Free Formula Exchange – Connects parents who need baby formula with those who have extra to share.

In partnership with the Galveston County Food Bank and Catholic Charities Beacon of Hope Center, Galveston College will distribute perishable and non-perishable food items to currently enrolled students. Food items will be picked up and distributed by Galveston College at the student designated location (Main Campus).  
 
  1. The program is open to all students enrolled in at least 1 credit hour or Continuing Education program.  
  2. If you selected GC Main campus as your pick-up location, please go to Atrium on the distribution date(s) selected. 
  3. If you selected GC Applied Technology Center as your pick-up location, please go to the Building 1 lobby on the distribution date(s) selected.
  4. All students must apply to receive food items.

In addition to the distributions at Galveston College:

  • Students also can locate unrestricted Food for Change markets  here  or by using the Houston Food Bank Mobile App. 
  • For a list of mobile food pantries open to the public in Galveston County, click  here. 
  • You can use your link to feed number at the mobile food distributions that occur outside of the GC Food for Thought program. The next one will be on Wednesday, November 26th at 8am. All you need to do is drive up and wait in the car line until your turn and provide them with your Link to Feed Number to receive the food items. The mobile pick up is located at Catholic Charities Galveston, Beacon of Hope Center (4700 Broadway Avenue J).

Volunteers Needed 
10 to 12 volunteers are needed to assist in unloading food for distribution at the Main Campus- Atrium. Trucks are scheduled to arrive at approximately 8 a.m. on the days with 9 a.m. distribution.
