The Galveston College Theatre Department will present “Airness” by Chelsea Marcantel, produced in special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., on April 24-27 in Room FA-207 of the college’s Fine Arts Building. The performances are free and open to the public.

Have you ever rocked out on an air guitar in your bedroom? How free did that make you feel? Marcantel invites you into the world of air guitar competition with “Airness.” Not only is air guitar very real, it has been a competition-based event for more than 20 years.

Air guitar is considered a physical sport by many, having been written about in Sports Illustrated. Air guitar competitions began in Finland, when two students were writing their thesis about how to achieve world peace. Their answer? Air guitar. Today, that message of peace and camaraderie is still alive and well in the worldwide air guitar community.

“Airness” is a comedic story about friendship and finding yourself through the wonderful, weird world of air guitar.

Show dates and times for “Airness” are April 24 at 7:30 p.m., April 25 at 7:30 p.m., April 26 at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and April 27 at 7:30 p.m. This production is recommended for mature audiences. There will be one 15-minute intermission during each performance.

Company members include: Corban Allen, Eva Arita, Elijah Barrie, Fiona Burton, Seth Cody, Rain Ebbett, Daniella Fink, Isabella Hernandez, Chad Keith, Jackson Pendergrass, Bryn Wade, and Diamond West.

The Galveston College Theatre Department offers a professional immersive training experience for all students within the disciplines of acting, playwriting, directing, design and technology. Four productions a year and a diverse range of theatre courses provide every opportunity for students to develop their theatrical skills. Scholarships are available.
