The Galveston College Whitecaps continued their strong late-season push Saturday, sweeping Coastal Bend College in a home doubleheader at the Lassie League Complex’s Carter Field.
 
The Whitecaps edged the Cougars 6-5 in a dramatic opener before pulling away for a 12-4 victory in the night cap. With the season series sweep of the CBC, GC improved to 13-7 in the Region 14 South Conference and 37-13 overall. The Whitecaps also swept the Cougars in Beeville, 3-2 and 6-1, on April 8 in the first half of conference play.
 
In the first game, GC held off multiple comeback attempts by Coastal Bend, including rallies in the fourth and seventh innings. The Whitecaps answered in the bottom of the seventh, plating the winning run to secure the 6-5 victory. GC freshman pitcher Jadyn Struxness earned the win in the circle, improving to 18-4 on the season.
 
The Whitecaps carried that momentum into the second game, responding to an early 3-2 deficit with an explosive eight-run third inning. The offensive surge proved more than enough in a 12-4 victory. Daphne Utajara picked up the win, moving to 13-7 on the year.
 
Offensively, GC was led by standout performances from third baseman Andrea Tagovailova and catcher Paeden Vincik. Tagovailova went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in seven runs, while Vincik also finished 3-for-3, including a home run and two RBIs.
The Whitecaps stayed on the road Monday, defeating Angelina College 14-4 in the first game of a doubleheader in Lufkin. The second game was still in progress at the time of publication.
 
Galveston College will close out the regular season Wednesday, May 6, hosting San Jacinto College-South for a doubleheader at 1 and 3:30 p.m. at Carter Field in Galveston. Admission is free and open to the public. Games can also be live streamed on www.tsbnsports.com.
