A dozen Galveston College welding students were selected among a competitive field of applicants to participate in Turner Industries’ inaugural class of its Advanced Manufacturing Mentoring program for community college students.

GC’s welding students will participate in eight mentoring sessions, two hours per month on Fridays from 8 a.m.-10 a.m. on-site at the Turner Industries Personnel and Training Center. The students will have the opportunity to learn interpersonal and practical skills, insights to help them succeed in their career and to see an actual manufacturing environment. The GC students attended their first session Oct. 13.

Students will also learn about basic safety in the workplace, communication skills and conflict resolution, understanding manufacturing drawings and material handling, relationship building and teamwork, personal financial planning, diversity in the workforce and stress management, and interview preparation.
