The first steps to learning a new trade could be free!

Thanks to a grant from the Texas Workforce Commission, Galveston College is able to offer a new Quickstart program designed to help people find entry-level jobs that help in the fast-growing HVAC and Electrical industries. The program runs for 8 weeks, and you will be presented with the basics of a trade including safety procedures, proper tool usage, regulations, codes and more. This program is designed for people to learn the basics of a trade and start making money right away.

We not only offer job training, but career counseling and help with job placement as well. Tuition is covered for everyone accepted into the program. However, if you are accepted into the program you will need to purchase your own steel toe boots.

Eligibility Requirements

An individual applying to the Quickstart Program must:

  • Be age 18 or older (proof of age is required such as driver’s license or birth certificate).
  • Be a United States citizen or certified to work in the United States (a Social Security card or original I-9 documentation is required).
  • Meet United States Military Selective Service registration requirements, if male (bring your Registration Acknowledgment Card).

Why is there a need?

High demand exists for electrical and HVAC helpers. These professions rank among the fastest growing trades. They provide stable, long-term employment with excellent opportunities for salary growth.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has predicted 14% growth in the need for electricians and HVAC technicians between 2014 and 2024. Each industry is adding tens of thousands of jobs – much faster than the average for all industries.

Wages for skilled workers average between $45,000 and $50,000 per year. The most experienced and hardest working people can make more than $70,000 per year. Of course, beginners make less; helpers in these trades average about $30,000 per year, but can advance quickly. Galveston College provides hands-on training for real-world opportunities such as these.
