Title V Projects
Student success centeR
Galveston College introduced the Student Success Center (SSC) to students on November 29, 2006. The SSC is the first of many improvements that will take place at Galveston College using Title V funding. The mission of the SSC is to provide the students of Galveston College the opportunity to develop diverse skills and strategies necessary for academic success. In addition, the SSC encourages personal responsibility and provides opportunities for success. Tutoring is provided at no cost to all Galveston College students and is offered on a drop-in or appointment basis. The SSC services include: tutoring for CORE curricula; test taking strategies; study skills; quizzing; COMPASS prep; and VCT, Internet courses.

Degree Audit
A degree audit is a computerized evaluation report that compares completed, in progress, and transfer coursework against program requirements. A report is generated that reflects coursework compared to requirements of a declared major at Galveston College. The report (audit) is unofficial and should be used only as a planning tool to assist with planning future coursework. Students are strongly encouraged to work closely with an advisor when interpreting the report.
The Degree Audit system and training was implemented in fulfillment of the Department of Education Title V program. The implementation of the system was incremental. The timeline for the process appears below:
-
The entry of student transfer data began in the Fall of 2006.
-
Spring 2007 - Counselors and Advisors were trained in the online system and how to use it.
-
Summer 2007 - Transfer courses and actual Degree Audits were viewable and ready for students, counselors and advisors.
-
Fall 2007 - 285 Degree Audits were produced for student use.
-
Fall 2008 - A student survey was conducted to determine effectiveness of the Degree Audit system. Adjustments to the system were made as result of the evaluation. This included more frequent updating of the system to maintain current data at all times.
-
Spring 2009 - All 250 graduates had Degree Audits produced and delivered in one day.
