SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION GUIDELINES AND CHECKLIST

Galveston College is committed to providing scholarship opportunities to deserving students by seeking funds from individuals, businesses, organizations and College resources.  The criteria for eligibility and the award amount for these scholarships have been developed in cooperation with each scholarship sponsor.

The scholarship program at Galveston college encourages graduating high school seniors, transfer students and currently enrolled students to apply for scholarship monies.  Awards range from $200 to $1,800 per academic year.  Academic excellence, financial need, displayed leadership abilities and participation in extracurricular activities are taken into consideration during the award process.

Complete all required applications and documentation and return to the Galveston College Financial Aid Office.

A.    GALVESTON COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS (All students are eligible to apply.  See list of scholarships below.)

  1. Galveston College Foundation scholarship applications will be matched with the individual scholarship criteria.  Students are required to submit only ONE application to be considered for every scholarship.
  2. Please read and carefully follow all instructions
  3. Fill out the complete application.  Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  4. Complete all personal contact information and optional information to be considered for all scholarships.
  5. List your current GPA (grade point average) and attach a copy of your current high school or college transcript.
  6. List your major or program of study.
  7. Attach two letters of reference.  Suggested sources: employers, teachers, other school officials (high school or college), social worker, counselors, ministers, civic leaders.  Letters of reference must be on professional letterhead.
  8. Type the required original essay containing 250 words or less about your needs and/or goals related to how a scholarship will help you advance your educational goals.
  9. List any other related information, such as clubs you are or were a member of, community volunteer service, awards or honors.
  10. It is highly recommended that you complete a FAFSA application at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
  11. Turn in all of the required materials by the due date.  Late applications will not be considered.

2014 - 2015 SCHOLARSHIPS
SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION FILING:  (FALL 2014, SPRING 2015)

The scholarships listed in this publication may be applied for by contacting the Galveston College Financial Aid Office on the first floor of Moody Hall and filling out a general scholarship application.  Some scholarships may require additional information.  The awards are made for the 2014-2015 year for fall and/or spring semesters.

Deadline:  Applications must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on May 5, 2014.

SISTER AGNESITA MEMORIAL / MORGAN HUMPHRIES SCHOLARSHIP - One - Two (1 - 2) scholarships at $500
Established by St. Mary's Hospital, in memory of Sister Mary Agnesita.  Scholarship will be awarded to full-time students who are enrolled in the associate degree nursing program (ADN).  A minimum G.P.A. of 2.5 and two letters of recommendation from nursing faculty are required.  Award can be applied towards tuition, fees, books, supplies and nursing uniforms.

MARIONETTE BEYAH MEMORIAL - Two (2) scholarships at $500
Established by the Faculty council in memory of long-time faculty member Marionette Beyah.  Applicants should be an office administration major who demonstrates financial need.  A minimum G.P.A. of 2.0 is required.  Funds are for tuition, fees and books.

BEN S. AND MARJORIE BROWN TRUST SCHOLARSHIP - Four (4) scholarships at $1,000
Applicants should be full- or part-time students (preferably male) who demonstrate financial need and are enrolled for a minimum of 6 semester hours.  A minimum G.P.A. of 2.0 is required.  Funds are for tuition, fees and books.

JOAN CANNADY SCHOLARSHIP - One (1) scholarship at $1,000
Established by John Cannady in memory of his wife Joan.  Student should be enrolled for a minimum of 12 hours, enrolled in a degree or certificate program, show financial need, and be a resident of Galveston.   A minimum G.P.A. of 2.0 is required.  Funds are for tuition, fees and books.

COCA COLA SCHOLARSHIP - Two (2) scholarships at $1,000
Applicants should be full- or part-time students who demonstrate financial need and are enrolled in a minimum of 6 semester hours.   A minimum G.P.A. of 2.0 is required.  Funds are for tuition, fees and books.

CULINARY SCHOLARSHIP  - Five (5) scholarships at $750
Applicants should be full-time Culinary Arts students who demonstrate financial need and are enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours in their second year.  A minimum G.P.A. of 2.5 is required, along with two letters of recommendation. One letter will be from employer or faculty and one from a personal reference.  Funding is for tuition, fees and books.

WILLIAM MAURY DARST SCHOLARSHIP - Two (2) scholarships at $1,000
Established by the Faculty Council in memory of charter faculty member Maury Darst.  Applicants should full-time students who demonstrate financial need.  A minimum G.P.A. of 2.0 is required.  Funding is for tuition, fees and books.

JOHN PARKER DAVIE TRUST - Five (5) scholarships at $1,000
Established through the Trust Department of Moody National Bank.  Students should be enrolled full-time, at least 12 hours, and pursuing technical careers.  A minimum G.P.A. of 2.0 is required.  Funding is for tuition, fees and books.

DEL PAPA ANNIVERSARY SCHOLARSHIP - One (1) scholarship at $1,000
Established in 2010 to allow students majoring in general studies, business or accounting to further educational goals.  Recipient must be a full- or part-time student in good standing with Galveston College, must be enrolled in and maintain at least six (6) credit hours with a minimum G.P.A. of 2.5, must be a citizen of the United States and may use scholarship for tuition, fees and books.  Preference should be give to student pursing a Business or Accounting major.  Preference may also be given based on financial need of student when other criteria are met.

EASTER-WILSON SCHOLARSHIP - Two (2) scholarships at $500
Established by Dr. Gary E. Wilson and Diane E. Wilson in honor of Mr. Finis Easter and Mrs. Normagene Wilson and in memory of Mrs. Frances Easter and Mr. Cecil Wilson.  Preference will be given to students who have completed 15 credit hours with a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0.  Students must show financial need and be a citizen of the United States.  Preference will be given to students who intend to get a degree in the analytical and physical sciences (engineering, math, biology, chemistry, physics, computer science or information science).  Students may be full- or part-time.  Funds are for tuition, fees and books.

EDMONDS / NELSON / CRAFT / PARKER - One (1) scholarship at$1,000
Established by the Edmonds Foundation and in memory of Gene Nelson and Clair Singleton Craft and Mrs. GladnieO Parker.  Applicants must be pursuing a teaching career and be enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours.  A minimum G.P. A. of 2.5 is required.  Funding is for tuition, fees and books.

LAURA MAE ELROD SCHOLARSHIP - One (1) scholarship at $1,000
Established by Deacon Tom Hunter, the Board of the Lasker Home for Children, and friends of Ms. Elrod, a respected, retired Galveston teacher.  Students must be enrolled for a minimum of 12 hours, enrolled in a degree or certificate program, show financial need, and be a resident of Galveston.  A minimum G.P.A. of 2.0 is required.  Funding is for tuition, fees and books.

GALVESTON COLLEGE SCHOLARS - Two (2) scholarships at $500
Established to give financial assistance to full- or part-time students who have at least a G.P.A. of 3.0 and must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 semester hours.  Funds are for tuition, fees and books.

GREATER TEXAS FOUNDATION - Three (3) scholarships at $250
This scholarship endowment was created through the generosity of the Greater Texas Foundation in 2008.  The awards are made to Galveston College students who show financial need.  The scholarship can be used for tuition, fees and books.

GREENWOOD / MILLS / PATTINSON - One (1) scholarship at $500
Established in memory of Ingrid Greenwood, Margaret Mills and Mary Pattinson.  Applicant must be a full-time student (12 semester hours), demonstrate financial need, be enrolled in a degree or certificate program and be a resident of Galveston.  A minimum G.P.A. of 2.5 is required.

HERMES / JORDAN ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP - Two (2) scholarships at $500
Must be a full-time student, enrolled in softball or volleyball in the GC Whitecaps Athletics Program.  A minimum G.P.A. of 2.0 is required.  Funding is for tuition, fees, books and educational materials.

MICHAEL HODGE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - Two (2) scholarships at $1,000
Established by the Hodge family in memory of Galveston College Associate Professor of English, Michael Hodge.  Available to full- and part-time students enrolled in a minimum of 6 semester hours and who are pursuing a degree in the humanities or fine arts.  A minimum G.P. A. of 2.5 is required.  Funding is for tuition, fees and books.

FRIENDS OF TRUDY JORDAN SCHOLARSHIP - One (1) scholarship at $500
The scholarship was established in honor of Trudy Jordan by her friends to recognize her many years of dedicated service to girl's and women's sports in Galveston.  The scholarship is available to any female student demonstrating leadership in her professional field or discipline.  Funds can be used for tuition, fees and books.

CARL KELLY SCHOLARSHIP - One (1) scholarship at $250
Anonymous donors created this endowed scholarship to honor Regent Carl Kelly who has served on the Board of Regents since 1998.  Applicants must be enrolled full- or part-time students, must have a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 and show financial need.  Students must be a citizen of the United States.  Scholarship can be used for tuition, fees and books.

CECILE KEMPNER VOCATIONAL TECHNICAL SCHOLARSHIP - Nine (9) scholarships at $1,800
This scholarship was created through the generosity of the Harris and Eliza Kempner Fund in 2012.  The awards are made to students in Galveston College's Vocational Technical programs.  The scholarship provides full tuition, fees and supplies.

LAMBDIN SCHOLARSHIP - Five (5) scholarships at $1,000
Established by Griff Lambdin, Charter member of Galveston College Board of Regents, in memory of his son, Marc.  Preference given to students who have financial need.  Students may be full- or part-time, must be a resident of the Galveston College district, and  must have a degree plan on file with the Galveston College Counseling office.  A minimum G.P.A. of 2.0 is required.  Funding is for tuition, fees and books.

CLELIE ANN MOORE CERAMICS SCHOLARSHIP - One (1) scholarship at $1,000
This scholarship is awarded each spring semester to a full- or part-time student enrolled in a ceramic arts class.  Scholarship covers tuition for one ceramics class and clay supplies.  This scholarship shall be awarded to a different student each year.  For more information on how to apply, contact Beth Thomas at (409) 944-1309.

MR. AND MRS. JESSEE MURILLO SCHOLARSHIP - Four (4) scholarships at $350
Established by the Murillo family to recognize a student with an interest in the arts or humanities.  A minimum G.P.A. of 2.0 is required and the student must be enrolled in arts or humanities class. Student must be enrolled for a minimum of 6 semester hours.  Funding is for tuition, fees and books.

NIELSON MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP - Two (2) scholarship at $1,000
Established in memory of Richard Lovelace and Laura Bragg McDaniel and in honor of Neils Nielson. Available to any student enrolled in a minimum of 6 hours per semester, with at least one Galveston College music course and a 2.5 G.P.A.  Funds are for tuition, fees and books. 

OLGA OLSON SCHOLARSHIP - One (1) scholarship at $250
This scholarship was established in the memory of Olga Olson by family members who wanted to recognize her personal accomplishments and those as a professional cook.  The scholarship is available to a female student who has completed at least thirty hours towards her degree with an emphasis in Culinary Arts.  The student must have a 3.0 G.P.A.  The scholarship can be used for tuition, fees and books.

LARRY PATTON SCHOLARSHIP - One (1) scholarship at $500
Established in 2008 to honor longtime Galveston College Professor of Music, Dr. Larry Patton.  Scholarship may be used for tuition and fees.  Preference is given to students enrolled in Music courses.

REGENTS SCHOLARSHIP - Two (2) scholarships at $1,000
Student should be enrolled for a minimum of 6 hours, enrolled in a degree or certificate program, and be a resident of Galveston.  A minimum G.P.A. of 2.0 is required.  Funding is for tuition, fees, books and educational materials.

ROTARY CLUB OF GALVESTON FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS - Three (3) scholarships at $1,600
This scholarship was created in 2013-2014 through the generosity of the Galveston Rotary Club Foundation for qualified students enrolled in degree plans to complete a sixty-hour program.  Scholarships will be awarded for Fall 2014 and Spring 2015.  A minimum G.P.A. of 2.5 is required.  Award is to be applied towards tuition and fees.

JANICE STANTON SCHOLARSHIP - One (1) scholarship at $500
Janice D. Stanton served as a member of the Boards of Regents of the Galveston Community College District from 1983 until 2004.  Before her final term ended, friends and family gathered to honor Janice Stanton and raised $10,000 with the help of the Galveston College Foundation for a named scholarship.  Mrs. Stanton continues to serve her community in civic affairs.  Student must demonstrate clear involvement with community and /or social service projects in Galveston and maintain a minimum G.P.A. of 2.0.

JEAN THOMPSON PSYCHOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP - Two (2) scholarships at $1,000
This scholarship was begun by Jean Thompson and her daughter, Dr. Barbara Thompson, to award students interested in the field of Psychology.  Student must be interested in psychology and taking a psychology class; must maintain a G.P.A. of 2.0; and, may be attending Galveston College on a full- or part-time basis.  Funding is for tuition, fees and books.

RUDY TOMJANOVICH SCHOLARSHIP - Two (2) scholarships at $1,100
Established by former NBA Champion Houston Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich and his wife, Sophie, to benefit students in the Galveston/Houston area.  Focus is on students who have financial need and show meritorious pursuit of learning and higher education.  Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 semester hours and maintain a G.P.A. of 2.0.  Application is available in the Financial Aid Office.  Funding can be used for tuition, fees and books.

WINDLE VOCAL FUND - Two (2) scholarships at $500
The Windle Vocal Fund is for students pursuing a career in the performing arts with an emphasis on voice or choral training.  A minimum G.P.A. of 2.2 is required.  Full- or part-time students with a minimum enrollment of 9 hours per semester are eligible.
