International Students

Thank you for considering Galveston College to pursue your college education.  To be considered for admission to GC, International students must submit the following:

APPLICATION

An Application for Admissions with the Core Residency form completed and signed by applicant must be submitted.
A signed Statement of Understanding must be submitted.
A signed Permission to Release Information form (if necessary) must be submitted.

International Applications will not be considered until files are complete.

The Application Deadlines for International students are:

Fall - July 14 and Spring - Oct 30

 AFFIDAVIT OF SUPPORT WITH SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION 
  1. An Affidavit of Support indicating that a sponsor will be responsible for all of your educational and living expenses must be submitted
  2. Supporting documents must be submitted along with the Affidavit of Support
    a.  A Bank letter indicating, the present balance in U.S. dollars, average balance, and length of time the account has been active.
    b. A letter written in English from sponsor’s employer indicating the position held, length of time at company, and annual salary (U.S. dollars)earned is required if the amount maintained in the bank account is less than $21,000 dollars.
  3. Students who will be financially supporting themselves throughout their enrollment will need to provide a certified bank letter indicating , the present balance in U.S. dollars, average balance, and length of time the account has been active. A minimum amount of $21,000 in U.S. dollars is required for student to show self support.
  4. The Letter(s) must have been issued within the past six months

LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY

Provide Test Results of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) .  Students should visit the TOEFL website to register for the test, get information about the test and find the closest testing facility.  The school code for GC is 6255, this must be provided to have official scores sent.

Test of English as a Foreigh Language (TOEFL). The minimum acceptable score of 500 on the written examiniation, a minimum of 173 on the computerized examination, a minimum of 61 on the internet examination, or a minimum score of 109 from an English Language Center (ELC) is required. Applicants are exempt from the TOEFL requirement if they speak English as their native language. This exemption refers to students from Australia, the Bahamas, Belize, Bermuda, the British Isles, Cameroon, English-speaking Canadian provinces, the Cayman Islands, the Fiji Islands, Gambia, Ghana, Guyana, Jamaica, Kenya, Liberia, Malta, Nauru, New Zealand, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, the Solomon Islands, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Tobago, Trinidad, United Kingdom, the Virgin Islands, the West Indies, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

TRANSCRIPTS 

Official transcripts of secondary school scores, including mark sheets and date of graduation, in their original language are required. For countries that do not re-issue official transcripts. Originals are required to be submitted in person for making copies. Copies of originals will not be accepted unless they are notarized or certified copies.

  • Official high school transcripts are required for students that have not received at least an Associate degree. All transcripts for work outside the U.S. must be officially translated and evaluated by an approved agency.
  • All College transcripts must be submitted. An official translation must be submitted by an approved agency for credits outside the U.S.  A document to document evaluation is the minimum evaluation required. If a degree has not been earned, a course by course evaluation is not required unless a student wishes to transfer their credits to GC.

INSURANCE

Medical insurance coverage is required throughout enrollment at GC for all F-1 Students. Insurance coverage should be at least $50,000 in health coverage and $5,000 in repatriation coverage. Insurance information is not required until after a student has been accepted and enrolled. GC provides a list of Insurance companies that provide insurance coverage specifically for international students. If a student is already insured proof of coverage should be submitted at time of registration.

TRANSFER STUDENT FROM A U.S. COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY

In addition to the above required documents; International students transferring from a U.S. college or university are required to provide the following documents.

  • A Foreign student advisors report
  • A copy of current I-20
  • A copy of passport and I-94 card

International students who are in the United States on student visas, but who have not attended the college from which they received their initial I-20, will not be considered for admissions to Galveston College until they have been enrolled at the college issuing the initial I-20 for at least one semester as a full-time student (12 or more hours).

Employment under F-1 Student Status
Since you are in the U.S. with the principle purpose of pursuing a full course of study or program, your employment options are very limited. Before engaging in any type of employment (paid or non-paid, on campus or off campus) you must first check with the International Student Advisor. For more information please read the following document: Employment under F-1 Status.

SEVIS
All student applicants must have a SEVIS generated I-20 issued by an educational institution approved by DHS, which they submit when they are applying for their student visa. The consular officer will need to verify your I-20 record electronically through the SEVIS system in order to process your student visa application. Unless otherwise exempt, participants whose SEVIS I-20 was issued on or after September 1, 2004 must pay a SEVIS I-901 Fee to the Department of Homeland Security for each individual program. The fee may be paid either through a special website, via Western Union, or by mail. See SEVIS-901 Fee or SEVIS for further information on how to pay the fee.
