The Public Affairs Office of Galveston College plans and directs activities in public information, special events, college publications, advertising, graphics, marketing, community relations and media relations. The Director of Public Affairs is the official College spokesperson and serves as an ex-officio member of the Galveston College Foundation.
The Public Affairs Office assists in employee relations with the publication of the weekly electronic Beacon and has ultimate responsibility for all external communications, including the college website.

PUBLIC AFFAIRS OFFICE
Joe Huff, III
Joe Huff serves as Director of Public Affairs at Galveston College. He joined the College in 1982 having moved to Galveston in 1980 to become Manager of Public and Community Relations at the Port of Galveston. Previously Joe served as Public Information Officer of the Virginia Housing Development Authority in Richmond, Virginia and Project Director of the Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority. Civic involvements have included Chairman of the Galveston County American Red Cross, President of the Galveston Attractions Association, and a Steering Committee member of the Galveston Historical Foundation. Joe received his B.A. in Political Science and Mass Communications from Emory and Henry College in Virginia. He has finished all coursework for a Master's in Cross Cultural Studies at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. Joe is the 1987 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award-City of Galveston and the 1999 recipient of the Island Rotary Vocational Service Award. He served as President of the Rotary Club of Galveston Island in 2001-2002 and 2011 - 2012. Joe has served as Chairman of the City of Galveston’s Committee on Unity and Tolerance in 2002 and 2003. In 1997-1999, Joe served as one of 12 members of the Board of Directors of the National Council on Marketing and Public Relations, a group of public relation professionals representing over 1200 community colleges in the U.S. and Canada. He is currently the President of Communities in Schools of Galveston County, the treasurer of the Gulf Coast Consortium of Public Relations Directors, serves on the Advisory Board of the Bay Area Council of Boy Scouts and the Board of Directors of the United Way.
Sylvia Ojeda is the Graphics Specialist at Galveston College. She is involved in development of publications, brochures, fliers and posters for various programs and special events at Galveston College. She also serves as the College’s primary photographer. She joined the Public Affairs Office in 1999. Prior to working in the Public Affairs Office, she worked for 15 years in the College’s Media and Print Center. Sylvia is a Born on the Island resident of Galveston Island. She is a 1984 graduate of Ball High School and she went on to earn a certificate in Offset Printing from Galveston College in 1986. She is working towards an Associate of Arts Degree in Graphic Arts and Multi-Media Communications. In 1994, Sylvia was the recipient of the College’s Classified Staff Exceptional Service Award from Administrators as well as Classified Staff. An avid nature photographer, her photos have been published in various magazines.
