Welcome to the Galveston College’s Engineering Department.  This program has been established to meet the educational needs of students and to prepare them to participate in the opportunities provided by an engineering degree. The Engineering program will provide the first two years of study to students seeking a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. Upon successful completion of the degree plan, students will be eligible to transfer to many four-year universities in Texas and elsewhere to obtain their Bachelors of Science in Engineering. The Engineering Program allows incoming students to learn more about the various disciples within Engineering and the possible career options each disciple offers.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF AN Engineer ? 

 

An engineer’s key functions are to design and to implement ideas, products, processes, and technology that supports our society and that provides the basis for a new tomorrow. While each engineering discipline focuses on a particular aspect of society or technology, each discipline allows an engineer to experience a broad range of opportunities and industries.

Mechanical Engineers apply the principles of physics, material science, and thermodynamics to the analysis and design of machines, mechanical components and systems, manufacturing, product reliability, safety, instrumentation and control processes, spacecraft design, and even polymers.

Industrial Engineers focus on optimizing the processes and the systems that support our society. They seek to develop, improve, implement and evaluate systems that effectively use people, money, knowledge, technology, information, energy, materials, analysis, and construction in order to predict and evaluate the results of defined systems and processes.

Students selecting an engineering profession will be in high demand upon graduation since the US is not able to produce enough engineers to meet the needs of the technology and service sectors. Given the number of subsections in each engineering disciple, there are numerous opportunities for career placement and advancement. According to the US Bureau for Labor and Statistics, the starting and average salaries for an engineer are given below. 

 

Mechanical Engineering

o   Starting $58,766

o   Average $74,920

Industrial Engineering

o   Starting $58,358

o   Average $73,820

Civil Engineering

o   Starting $52,048

o   Average $74,400

Electrical Engineering

o   Starting $60,125

o   Average $82,160

 

Two-Year Degree

Most of the positions in engineering today require at least a Bachelor of Science. The Engineering Program is designed to allow students to complete the first two years of their engineering education at Galveston College and then continue their education at a four year institution of their choice. 

Math Requirements

Since Engineering requires students to have strong math skills, the following Math Courses are part of the Mechanical, Industrial, Civil, and Electrical Engineering Degree Plans:

·         Calculus I

·         Calculus II 

·         Calculus III

·         Differential Equations

 

For those students that might need to improve or practice their math skills, Galveston College is able to provide you with the courses necessary to prepare you for an engineering curriculum. Your math skills will be invaluable to you as you undertake this engineering program and as you continue on at a four year institution.  

 

Transfers 

The curriculum is designed to meet state requirements and to be easily transferable to most Texas universities. We encourage students to consider their options when selecting a four year institution and to make a timely decision for transferring their credits. Please keep in mind, each university sets its own standards for admissions with regards to GPA requirements, GPA calculation, grade requirements, number of credits accepted for transfer, documentation, and deadlines.
