Galveston College Computer Science Department

Welcome

Welcome to the Computer Science Department home page. This site reviews useful information for those who will be taking courses in the computer science department of Galveston College, whether as majors or as students seeking to improve their computer skills by taking required or non-required courses.
What is the role of a computer science major?
Computer Science is the one of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) areas that has applications in all fields. In the modern world, computer scientists are essential to every segment of society in the management of information.
Careers
For up-to-date information on jobs for computer science majors, go to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. The site reports that employment opportunities in many computer occupations are growing faster or much faster than average. In Texas, current mean annual wage estimates range from $51,000 (Computer Support Specialists) to $97,000 (Software Developers, Systems Software.) The Houston area is especially strong in jobs in the computer sciences with wages rising above the Texas averages.
Two-year degree
Many computer science employment opportunities require a more advanced degree. Galveston College offers an Associate of Science degree in Computer Science which is designed to transfer to any number of four year universities in the area. This degree satisfies the state approved Field of Study Curriculum for Computer Science.
Non majors
If you are not majoring in computer science, you may be interested in taking Introduction to Computing (COSC 1301) as a basic computer literacy course or to improve your computer skills and introduce you to the newest technology. These skills will certainly help you to be more successful in your other coursework and future career. Many Galveston College degree plans suggest Introduction to Computing as a useful elective.
