Galveston College recently held a ribbon cutting and dedication for the new Abe and Annie Seibel Wing of the Cheney Student Center. Galveston College’s 2011 Summer I Session classes begin Monday June 6 with general registration being held from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 31 through June 2. Galveston College is offering a Nurse’s Aide class designed to teach students who continue on to work in nursing home environments. This course prepares students for entry level nursing assistants by achieving a level of knowledge, skills, and abilities essential to provide basic care to residents of long-term care facilities. Topics include resident’s rights, communication, safety, observation, reporting, and assisting residents in maintaining basic comfort and safety. Emphasis will be placed on effective interaction with members of the health care team. Students are required to attend a CPR Level C (health care provider) class that will be scheduled by the instructor. Students must also enroll concurrently in Nurse Aide Clinical (NURA 1060) to complete the Certified Nursing Assistant Program. The cost is $400, and the course fee covers the cost of the state certification exam, CPR for Healthcare Providers, and insurance. Textbook and scrubs are extra and are required. A High School Diploma or GED is also required. Classes will be held from 5:30 - 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, from June 13 to July 26. Galveston College’s Continuing Education Division is offering a Bank Teller course. In this course, students will develop the necessary skills to operate a teller window. The course includes customer service, bank security, practical knowledge of teller equipment, and bank regulations. No textbook is required, and handouts will be provided. Galveston College is offering a course in Conversational Spanish. This course is designed to develop conversational skills in Spanish and will emphasize the active, practical use of Spanish through an interactive and personalized learning experience. Based on gradual acquisition of useful vocabulary and material related to everyday life, students will become familiar with the Spanish speaking world. Textbook required. Galveston College can teach your dog new tricks! This course includes an overview of basic obedience (on lead), basic commands, canine psychology, socialization, and solving behavior problems. The class will offer an individual approach to each dog / owner partnership, allowing participation of puppies (12+ weeks) to dogs of any age. Dogs must have all of their vaccinations, and the vaccination record is required on the first day of class. Only one dog per student is allowed. Dogs will not attend the first day of class. Enrollment is limited to 8 dogs per class. No textbook is required. The three week course will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from June 28 to July 14. The cost is $75.
