Galveston College Offers Healthcare Career Options

Galveston College is offering several non-credit options for students to gain job training for healthcare careers. The NURSE’S AIDE course provides preparation for entry level nursing assistants to achieve a level of knowledge, skills, and abilities essential to provide basic care to residents of long-term care facilities.  Topics include resident’s rights, communication, safety, observation, reporting and assisting residents in maintaining basic comfort and safety. The course offers an  emphasis on effective interaction with members of the health care team. Students are required to attend a CPR Level C class to be scheduled by the instructor.  Students must enroll concurrently in Nurse Aide Clinical (NURA 1060) to complete the Certified Nursing Assistant Program.  The course fee includes state certification exam, CPR for Healthcare Providers and insurance. Both textbooks and scrubs are required, as well as a High School Diploma or GED.

Classes will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, from Feb. 7 through Mar. 28, 2011. Cost for this course is $400. For more information contact Continuing Education at 409-944-1344.

Clinical-Nurse/Nursing Assistant/Aide

Galveston College is offering a course to train Clinical Nurses and Nursing Assistants. The course provides a health-related, work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts.  Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional.  Students must enroll concurrently in Nurse Aide (NURA 1001) to complete the Certified Nursing Assistant Program.  Students must wear burgundy scrubs to clinical assignments. EKG Technician

Galveston College is offering training for EKG technicians. This comprehensive 50-hour EKG Technician Certification Program prepares students to function as EKG Technicians and to take the American Society of Phlebotomy Technician (ASPT) - Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technician exam and other National Certification Exams.  This course will include important practice and background information on anatomy and physiology of the heart, medical disease processes, medical terminology, medical ethics, legal aspects of patient contact, electrocardiography and stress testing.   Additionally, students will practice with EKG equipment and perform hands on labs including introduction to the function and proper use of the EKG machine normal, the normal anatomy of the chest wall for proper lead placement, 12-lead placement and other clinical practices.  Textbooks and supplies are included in the tuition.  The exam fees are not included in tuition.

Prerequisites:

• Students should have taken math and science in high school. 
• High School Diploma or GED is required. 
• Criminal Background check is required.

Classes will be held from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from Feb. 15 through Apr. 12, 2011. Cost for this course is $999. For more information contact Continuing Education at 409-944-1344.

Dental Assisting Program

The Dental Assisting Program prepares students for entry level positions in one of the fastest growing health care positions – Dental Assisting.  The Dental Assisting program will cover key areas and topics exposing the student to both classroom and laboratory, hands-on instruction.  The classroom instruction reviews the necessary anatomy, terminology, legal and ethical issues as well as the policy and guidelines necessary to understanding the scope of practice and the practical aspects of dental assisting.   Topics include instrument identification, equipment maintenance, tooth structure and oral cavity anatomy, dental anesthesia, sterilization and charting.  The student will learn the steps necessary to assist the dentist, while providing quality dental care within the community.  Program includes review of tooth charting, restorations, bridge implants, bitewing, pantograph, and periapical x-ray and the mixing of dental cements.

Additionally, this 100 hour course includes a CPR certification course and covers the relevant material necessary to prepare students to take the State of Texas “TSBDE” Dental Assisting exam offered throughout the State of Texas.  Textbooks and supplies are included in the tuition.
