Galveston College recently held its annual employee awards banquet at Fisherman’s Wharf in Galveston.  Pictured is Interim Galveston College President William R. Auvenshine presenting the Adjunct Faculty Exceptional Service Award for 2007 to philosophy instructor Rabbi James Kessler.  The average class size at the local community college is fifteen but Kessler’s philosophy classes have been known to draw over 100 students.

Galveston College Celebrates 40th Anniversary with Largest Graduating Class Ever

Galveston College celebrated its 40th anniversary graduation at Moody Gardens on Thursday, May 17, 2007 with three hundred and forty eight candidates for two year associates’ degrees and one year certificates.  It was the largest group of graduation candidates in the island community colleges forty year history.

On hand for the occasion was Dr. Marc Nigliazzo, President of Temple College who served as Galveston College’s President during the institutions silver anniversary.  It was an evening demonstrating successful outcomes for students, their families, friends and employees.  Over 2,200 spectators were on hand at the Moody Gardens Convention Center to witness the historic event.

The nearly 350 candidates for graduation represented the academic areas of General Studies, Accounting, Criminal Justice, Biomedical Technology, Associate Degree Nursing, Radiography, Nuclear Medicine Technology, Emergency Medical Services, Surgical Technology, Vocational Nursing, Breast Imaging, Computerized Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Phlebotomy.  The group represented the Workforce areas of Hospitality Management/Culinary, Office Administration, General Management, Culinary Arts and Medical Office Assistant.

Summer Session Registration

Open registration for the Summer Session I will be held Tuesday, May 29th through Thursday, May 31st from 8:00 am until 6:00 pm at the 4015 Avenue Q campus of Galveston College.  Summer Session I classes begin Monday, June 4, 2007.

Open registration for the Summer Session II will be held Thursday, July 12th from 8:00 am until 6:00 pm and classes start Monday, July 16, 2007.

Galveston College Announces Kids’ College 2007

Galveston College’s Continuing Education Division has announced plans for two summer sessions of classes in their Kids’ College Program.  Session I is from June 4 until June 21 and Session II is from July 9 to July 26.  Classes meet on Mondays and Wednesdays at a cost of $45 for each class.  Camps meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays at a cost of $85.
The courses and camps are for students ages 6 through 12.  Camps include Basketball, Art, Weird Science, Indoor Soccer, Victory Cheerleading.  In addition, six new and exciting Camps have been added to the schedule. They include Football, Speaking with Style, Computer and Recreation, Dance, Piano & Voice, and Percussion 101. Camps are 4 hours and students can take more than one camp in each Session.  Camps are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. until12:00 p.m. and 1:00 until 5:00 p.m.  Classes are Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.  Classes consist of Fun Art!, Art Under Construction, Come Create, PowerPoint Pizzazz, Invisible Science, Ooey Gooey Science, Mixtures Galore, Math Madness, Edible Math, Don’t Count It Out, Spanish, Creative Writing, Ready To Read,  Beginning Piano, Lil Chess Champs, Fashion Modeling, Hip Hop Dance,  Kickboxing, Pilates and Nutrition, Horticulture, Space Exploration, Math Studies Hands-on, and Study Smart.  New Classes include:  Computer Fun, “Can You Hear Me Now”, Kids in the Kitchen, Snack Shack, Math Magic, Bringing Reading to Life, Hip Hop and Dr. Seuss, and Chemistry for Kids.  Register by phone before May 31, 2007.  Call (409) 944-1344 or (409) 944-1347 for more information.
