The 2013-2014 Galveston College Lecture Series “Left Brain/Right Brain: Bridging the Gap” continues Thursday, April 10, and features Dr. Robert F. Curl, University Professor Emeritus, Pitzer-Schlumberger Professor of Natural Sciences Emeritus, and Professor of Chemistry Emeritus at Rice University. His lecture titled “The Astounding Fullerenes: An Adventure in Chemistry” will be held on April 10 at 6:00 p.m. in the Abe and Annie Seibel Wing.
Dr. Curl graduated from William Adams High School, Alice, TX, received a BS in Chemistry from Rice University and his PhD in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley.
Over his long career, Dr. Curl has carried out research in a number of fields of physical chemistry involving both experiment and theory. His research has primarily focused on studying the spectra, structure, and kinetics of small free radicals using microwave spectroscopy and tunable lasers.
Dr. Curl is best known as a member of the team that discovered the carbon cage compounds known as the fullerenes. For this discovery, Dr. Curl shared the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1996 with Sir Harold Kroto and Dr. Richard Smalley.
Galveston College Early Registration for the 2014 Mini semester, Summer I and Summer II sessions, as well as the 2014 Fall semester begins April 14. Early registration hours are 8 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, and from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays. Mini semester classes begin May 19, Summer session I classes begin June 9, Summer II session classes begin July 14, and the Fall semester begins August 25. The Whitecaps Baseball team will host the following home games the remainder of this season. Home games are played at the Bernard Davis Field located on 83rd Street & Frank Giusti Dr.
The Galveston College Whitecaps Softball team will host two homes games this April. On Wednesday, April 9, The Lady Whitecaps will host San Jacinto College at 2:00 p.m. and at 4:00 p.m. On Saturday, April 12, the Whitecaps will host Blinn College at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Home games are played at the Dot Watson Lassie League complex.
