Galveston College staff and faculty will join the staff of the Galveston Chamber of Commerce, The Worksource, Congressman Randy Weber’s office, UTMB and the City of Galveston in organizing the Oceans of Opportunity Job Fair on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Galveston Island Convention Center located at 5600 Seawall Boulevard in Galveston. Galveston College will operate a booth that has information on current job opportunities and workforce training programs in areas that offer employment after completion. Galveston College will also host a “Speaker’s Platform” that will host twelve faculty and staff presenters on subjects covering Work-study programs, Workforce programs and Social Media use in the job search.
The March 19, 2014 Oceans of Opportunity Job Fair is the 9th annual event sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce together with the District 14 Congressman’s office , the City of Galveston and Worksource. Last year over 1,200 job seekers attended the event.
The Galveston College Radiography Club will host a blood drive with the UTMB Blood Bank on Monday, March 24, 2014 from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.in the Abe and Annie Seibel Wing of the Student Center. Galveston College and the Rotary Club of Galveston are sponsoring the 2014 Career Day and Transfer Fair in the Abe and Annie Seibel Wing from 10 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26, 2014. Over 75 employers and exhibitors will be on the Galveston College campus and students as well as the general public are invited to attend, bring resumes and fill out applications for employment. Registration for the Spring Second Start term is now in progress. Registration hours are from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday and 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.
Spring Second Start classes begin Monday, February 24, 2014 and will end Wednesday, May 14, 2014. Courses offered include Integrated Reading/Writing III (Hybrid), Basic Math, Introductory Algebra, Composition I, Composition II, World Literature I, Forms of Literature II, Environmental Science I (Hybrid), Texas Government, United States History I, United States History II, General Psychology, and Introduction to Sociology. Galveston College, in partnership with the Galveston Chamber of Commerce, has set dates for the new Leadership Galveston course for the 2014-2015 class. Sessions will be held from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Fridays, September 19, 2014; October 17, 2014; November 14, 2014; December 12, 2014; January 16, 2015; February 20, 2015 and March 13, 2015. Acceptance into the program is based upon potential leadership skills, involvement in community affairs and concern for the future of Galveston. As civic, business and government leaders tackle current issues, a new generation of leadership is training to overcome the obstacles that will arise in the coming years. Leadership Galveston is a training ground, providing participants with the necessary skills to meet those challenges.
