Galveston College Announces First of Glorious Gatherings

On Saturday, November 16, 2013, the owners of Backbay Emporium, Jim and Mike Harwell, are hosting the first in a series of Glorious Gatherings benefiting the Galveston College Foundation Universal Access program. Admission is a $25 donation per person and all Galveston College supporters are urged to attend. Raffle tickets will be sold at the event for generous prizes. Jim and Mike are pleased to sponsor the fundraising event that will include music and appetizers. The November 16 fundraising event at Backbay Emporium will be from 5:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. in the delightful two story antique store and glittering courtyard at 1513 19th Street in Galveston. Tickets go on sale in the College's Business Office on Monday, October 21, 2013.
 The Galveston College Foundation Universal Access program began in the fall of 2001 giving tuition assistance to all local high school, home schooled and GED graduates who live in Galveston. For more information call 409-944-1303.

Cake Decorating Class Graduates

The Cake Decorating class with Galveston College's Continuing Education program ended last Tuesday evening with a wonderful "Cake Show."  Based on the techniques and practice they learned in the four week class, students made and decorated their cakes to show off.  Family and friends were treated to the cake artists explanations of their designs, and a tasting of each and every cake.  Not only did the end results look and taste great, but several of the students said that they didn't even know how to use a cake tip tool before taking class.

During the course students  made various cakes, iced cookies, cupcakes, and different kinds of icings and fondant embellishments.

Students also received a beautiful color, spiral bound booklet with the instructions for various kinds of icing techniques and recipes for cakes and icings they learned in the course. Cake Decorating Instructor Mirta Salinas, said she enjoyed teaching a group of students who were enthusiastic and creative.

Leadership Galveston 2014

Galveston College, in partnership with the Galveston Chamber of Commerce, has set dates for the new Leadership Galveston course for the Spring 2014 Semester. Sessions will be held from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Fridays, January 24, February 7, February 21,
March 7, March 21, April 4 and April 25.  The cost is $350 per registrant.  For information, contact Joe Huff, Director of Public Affairs, at either 409-944-1302 or email at jhuff@gc.edu.  The last day to register is January 10, 2014.

Acceptance into the program is based upon potential leadership skills, involvement in community affairs and concern for the future of Galveston.  As civic, business and government leaders tackle current issues, a new generation of leadership is training to overcome the obstacles that will arise in the coming years.  Leadership Galveston is a training ground, providing participants with the necessary skills to meet those challenges.

Prospective students must complete the College’s Leadership Galveston application and the Employer’s Certification forms found online at www.gc.edu, under the Schedule of Classes and the Public Affairs subsections.
