Nurse Aide for Health Care

This is your first step to a rewarding healthcare career. Galveston College is an approved provider of the federally required course to become a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) in a long-term care facility.  Course topics include residents’ rights, communication, safety, observation, reporting, and basic comfort and safety. Emphasis is placed upon effective interaction with the health care team.  You will receive AHA certification in Healthcare Providers CPR as part of the course.
The cost is $675. The class meets Mondays through Thursdays, July 15 to August 22, from 5:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Call 409-944-1344 for enrollment prerequisites or more information.

Cake Decorating

Whether you want to learn cake decorating just for fun or your dream is to have a cake decorating business, you will be delighted with this class. Your instructor decorates cakes professionally and loves working with students just learning the art, as well as those who wish to add to their expertise.  You’ll learn the fundamentals of cake decorating, including baking a great cake and making and using various kinds of icings. Learn how to make fancy borders, specialty designs, coloring and cake writing techniques.  Students must provide their own cakes and supplies for the class.  Supplies and costs will vary depending on your preferences and will be discussed at the first class. Cookie Crazy!

What kid doesn’t like cookies? You’ll love this class where you learn to make and decorate your own cookie creations. A great introduction to the joys of the kitchen, you learn how to follow a recipe as you make and bake different kinds of cookie dough. The instructor stresses safety and the importance of following general kitchen rules. Decorating techniques such as stars, swirls and more are included and you can take home and show off your creations. Ages 8-12. The cost is $99. The class meets Monday, July 8 through Thursday, July 11, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Call 409-944-1344 for more information.

The REAL CSI

Do you love the CSI shows on television? This is an exciting, hands-on opportunity for participants to learn about the criminal justice system in general and real crime scene analysis in particular. During this four evening course, the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with Gulf Coast Forensics, is presenting a Continuing Education non-credit training class of Crime Scene Investigation. You’ll learn about the tools and techniques used in securing crime scenes, collecting and analyzing evidence, fingerprinting, crime scene mapping and photography, and even several case presentations. Course is taught by a Certified Senior Crime Scene Analyst and includes cost of various crime scene supplies and tools used in the class. Ages 17+ Senior discount available. The cost is $129. The class will be held on Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. July 11 through August 1. Call 409-944-1344 for more information.

Leadership Galveston 2013

Galveston College, in partnership with the Galveston Chamber of Commerce, has set dates for the new Leadership Galveston course for the fall 2013 semester. Sessions will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Fridays September 13, September 27, October 11, October 25, November 8, November 22 and December 6. The cost is $500 per registrant. Acceptance to the program is based upon potential leadership skills, involvement in community affairs and concern for the future of Galveston.
