Galveston College Lecture Series

Galveston College Announces New Lecture Series

The 2012-2013 Galveston College Lecture Series is titled “The Bounty of Texas, Assets and Opportunities” and the guest speakers for the fall session have been announced.

The second speaker for the 2012-2013 “The Bounty of Texas" Lecture Series is titled is Bradford Jones, Terrestrial Archaeologist/Collections Manager, from the Texas Historical Commission in Austin, Texas. His lecture titled “La Belle and the Archaeology of La Salle’s Expedition to the Mississippi,” will be held on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 in the Abe and Annie Seibel Wing.

The 1686 wrecking of the little six-gun frigate La Belle in Matagorda Bay, marked a turning point in La Salle’s expedition to establish a French colony on the Gulf Coast. Over 300 years later, the rediscovery and excavation of La Belle by the Texas Historical Commission re-invigorated research on La Salle’s expedition. This presentation will examine the history of the expedition through the lens of the archaeology of La Belle, focusing on the evolving interpretations of the shipwreck and its reflection of French colonial ambitions in Texas. In addition, this presentation will discuss the ongoing conservation and exhibition plans for La Belle that will preserve this unique piece of Texas’ rich history for future generations
