Credit classes for the 2012 Fall semester begin today. Late registration continues from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday, August 27 and Tuesday, August 28. Galveston College is closed on Monday, Sept. 3 in observance of Labor Day. Classes and office hours will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 4. Chris Joblin has been hired as the new Head Baseball Coach for the Galveston College Whitecaps. Coach Joblin, an Idaho native, most recently held the Head Baseball Coach position at Clarendon College for the 2011-2012 season. Clarendon Baseball finished that season with a 34-23 record, and advanced to the post-season Region V Tournament. His team accomplished a ranking of 6th in the nation in Team Batting Average, finishing with a .346 average. He previously held the Assistant Baseball Coach position at New Mexico Junior College before serving in the same capacity at Clarendon. Chris earned a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from the University of Central Missouri, and an Associate’s degree from Lamar Community College. He played college baseball at both the NJCAA and NCAA Division II levels.
Joining Coach Joblin as the new Assistant Baseball Coach is GC alumnus Cory Holley, who pitched for the Whitecaps in the 2007 and 2008 seasons, and graduated with an Associate’s Degree in 2008. Cory is a Houston native, and completed both a Bachelor’s degree in General Studies and Master’s degree in Kinesiology from Lamar University, where he also played baseball. His pitching led the Cardinals to the 2010 Southland Conference Championship, and onto the NCAA Regional. Cory has spent the last two years as the pitching coach for the Lamar University baseball team, who earned an overall ERA of 3.89 – the lowest at Lamar since 2004.
The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) recently announced the 2012 NJCAA Academic Achievement Awards and Galveston College Whitecaps athletes shared in the honors. The Whitecaps that earned the 2012 Superior Academic Achievement Award for having GPAs of 3.80 - 3.99 are: Softball players Tara Nykoluk and Mallory Livingston, and Baseball players Jared Pinson and Matthew Plitt.
The NJCAA also announced 2012 Exemplary Academic Achievement Award winners for athletes with GPAs of 3.60 - 3.79. Among them were Whitecaps Softball player Kimberly Crawford and Whitecaps Baseball player Keegan Smith.
Both 2011-2012 Whitecaps Baseball and Softball teams also received the NJCAA All-Academic Team honors for having team GPAs above 3.0. Whitecaps Baseball finished with a team GPA of 3.22, while Whitecaps Softball earned a team GPA of 3.36. Galveston College is extremely proud of all athletes who contributed to these awards, and who also both finished their 2011-2012 Whitecap seasons as runners-up in their respective post-season regional tournaments.
