Nursing student Erica Martinez is congratulated by Galveston College President Dr. Myles Shelton on receiving the Ben and Marjorie Brown Scholarship for 2011 – 12. Martinez is a 1997 Ball High graduate who is pursuing an Associate Degree in the Nursing program at Galveston College.
Galveston College Whitecaps will introduce its newest coach, Mike Silva when the 2011 – 2012 baseball season begins. He brings broad experience in coaching, NJCAA scholarship compliance, recruiting, and winning.
Coach Silva, 31, comes to Galveston from Clarendon, Texas where he most recently was the Head Coach of the Clarendon College Bulldogs, completing the 2011 baseball season with an overall record of 34-23.
Coach Silva is a Graduate of East Central University, where he received a Master of Education in Sports Administration in 2009. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Coach Silva is teaching Weight Training I & II and Sports & Athletics.
Silva expressed with confidence that the current team stands a very good chance at succeeding in the Region XIV Athletic Conference this year. “I’m going to try and build the team up like it was in the 90’s”. Additionally, Silva believes that winning starts in the classroom. “Confidence in academics reflects on the field,” according to Silva.

Galveston College is offering a course for Nurse’s Aide. The course provides preparation for entry level nursing assistants to achieve a level of knowledge, skills, and abilities essential to provide basic care to residents of long-term care facilities. Topics include resident’s rights, communication, safety, observation, reporting and assisting residents in maintaining basic comfort and safety. The course has an emphasis on effective interaction with members of the health care team. Students are required to attend a CPR Level C (health care provider) class to be scheduled by the instructor. Students must enroll concurrently in Nurse Aide Clinical (NURA 1060) to complete the Certified Nursing Assistant Program. The course fee includes state certification exam, CPR for Healthcare Providers and insurance. Textbook and Scrubs are required for this course. High School Diploma or GED is also required. The cost for this class is $400. Galveston College’s Medication Aide Refresher course provides intensive training in identified area(s) to meet continuing education and/or review/up-date requirements associated with professional licensure or certification. This course was designed to be repeated multiple times to improve student proficiency. No textbook is required. The cost for this course is $50. This course will be offered on three separate dates during the fall semester. Course dates are Saturday, September 17 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Saturday, October 22 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, December 3 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. All classes will be held off-campus. Galveston College is offering a course in Introduction to Excel Spreadsheets. The course provides instruction in terminology, program parameters, display characteristics, formatting features, mathematical functions, and printing. No textbook is required. Handouts will be provided. Flash Drive is required. The cost is $185. The class will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, from September 26 through November 2.
