Galveston College and Sam Houston State University recently signed an articulation agreement that formalizes for both institutions of higher education and the public a framework designed to enhance the educational experience of students attending both schools. Galveston College’s legendary Community Chorale will be directed by a well known face and voice in Galveston music as Mike Gilbert joins as Adjunct Faculty for the community college. The Community Chorale restarts on Monday, August 29, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in the Fine Arts Room 207 with Gilbert at its helm.
Gilbert taught for 31 years in the Galveston Independent School District including 23 years at Ball High School. He joined the Moody Memorial First Methodist Church as Director of Music in the summer of 2003. He has directed also at First Baptist Church and Central Christian Church in Galveston.
Gilbert received his bachelors of Music degree from Texas A&I University in Kingsville and a Masters in Music Education and a Masters in School Administration from the University of Houston. He has sung for 23 years with the Houston Symphony Chorus and he currently serves as Vice President of the Houston/Galveston – Stavanger Sister City Society.
General Registration begins on August 22 and continues through August 27. General registration hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 27. Galveston College will hold a Blood Drive on Thursday, September 8, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in the parking lot on 39th Street and Avenue Q. For more information contact Araceli Lopez, Coordinator of Student Activities, at 409-944-1228.
Galveston College, in partnership with the Galveston Chamber of Commerce, has set dates for the new Leadership Galveston 2011-2012. Sessions will be held from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Fridays, September 16, October 21, November18, December 16, January 20, February 17, March 23, and April 20. The cost is $500 per registrant. The Galveston College Board of Regents recently appointed Carol A. Reyes and Jennifer Marriott as faculty for the Associate Degree Nursing program. Carol A. Reyes received her bachelors and masters degrees in Nursing from The University of Texas Medical Branch. She joins the college after serving as Nursing faculty with College of the Mainland and South Texas College. Jennifer Marriott received her bachelors in Nursing from St. Francis Medical Center College of Nursing and a Masters in Nursing from Texas Women’s University in Denton, Texas. Marriott joins the nursing faculty after serving as a Nurse Practitioner with Baylor Regional Medical Center and UT MD Anderson Cancer Center.
