Galveston College and Sam Houston State University recently participated in an articulation agreement that formalizes a framework designed to enhance the educational experience of students attending both schools. The Galveston County Branch of Thrivent Financial, in partnership with the Lutheran Churches of Galveston County and the Galveston College Student Government Association will be offering two FREE Identity Theft Seminars on Saturday, August 27th. The seminars will be conducted on the Galveston College campus at 4015 Ave. Q in the beautiful new Seibel Wing of the Cheney Student Center. Parking is available, and the public is invited.
The sessions on identity theft prevention will be presented twice, one at 9:30 am and one at 11:30 am. The seminars are titled “Identity Theft: What You Need to Know.” During these educational workshops, participants will learn how identity theft can occur, how to protect personal information, and what steps should be taken if identity theft strikes.
Presenters will teach participants how to spot identity theft scams, and will provide helpful hints on how to safely dispose of documents with sensitive, personal information. The proper use of credit and debit cards will also be covered.
Thrivent Financial is providing a commercial shredding truck from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. that will be located on Ave. Q ½, adjacent to the Seibel Wing. No reservations are necessary.
Early registration for the 2011 fall semester continues this week. Early Registration hours will be held from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, August 15 and Tuesday, August 16 and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, August 17 and Thursday, August 18. The College will be closed for General Assembly on Friday, August 19.
General Registration begins on August 22 and continues through August 27, as follows: from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday; from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday; and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 27. The first day of class for the 2011 Fall semester is August 29. For more information call 409-944-4242.
Galveston College is offering a Nurse’s Aide course that prepares students for entry level nursing assistants to achieve a level of knowledge, skills, and abilities essential to provide basic care to residents of long-term care facilities. Topics include resident’s rights, communication, safety, observation, reporting and assisting residents in maintaining basic comfort and safety. Emphasis is on effective interaction with members of the health care team. Students are required to attend a CPR Level C (health care provider) class to be scheduled by the instructor. Students must enroll concurrently in Nurse Aide Clinical (NURA 160) to complete the Certified Nursing Assistant Program. The course fee includes state certification exam, CPR for Healthcare Providers and Insurance. A High School Diploma or GED is required. Fast Track courses run: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, Aug. 15 - 23; Oct. 17 – 25; and Dec. 5 – 13. A 6-wwek course runs from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Sep. 12 – Oct. 24.
The application packet can be picked up at the Galveston College, Continuing Education Department, 4015 Ave Q, Galveston, TX 77550. Completed application packets must be turned in to the Continuing Education Department for director approval. Approved applications are required to receive a registration form to be officially registered. NO EXCEPTIONS! Other supporting information required:
• Copy of a current government issued driver’s license or photo ID
• Copy of Social Security Card (name on SS card & drivers license and application must match exactly)
• Physical Examination/Immunizations - Students must have a physical exam completed by a health care practitioner or doctor, immunizations required prior to registration are TB screen test with a negative result and the first shot of Hep. B and Tetanus.
• A clear criminal background check from the Texas Dept. of Public Safety.
• State Exam Fee: Money order payable to NACES Plus in the amount of $106.00. Make sure money order is signed and complete before turning it in with you application packet.
Students must complete the items listed above prior to registration. Signed registration cards MUST be picked up in the PSC building once all required items have been turned in. The cost of the course is as follows:
Tuition: In District: $575.00 Out of District: $575.00
Cost includes: Healthcare Provider CPR certification.

Galveston College, in partnership with the Galveston Chamber of Commerce, has set dates for the new Leadership Galveston 2011-2012. Sessions will be held from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Fridays, September 16, October 21, November18, December 16, January 20, February 17, March 23, and April 20. The cost is $500 per registrant.
